Gary Tomkins
VP, Core Capabilities

As vice president, Technical Intelligence, Mr. Tomkins leads the engineering teams and guides the sales, marketing and product management activities. Previously Gary headed up Chipworks’ core capabilities team and was a senior member of Chipworks Technical Intelligence business unit. Technical Intelligence at Chipworks works closely with customers around the globe, delivering technical analysis that helps them to benchmark their product roadmaps, reduce the time-to-market and de-risk research and development.
Prior to his appointment to vice president, Gary led the Chipworks technical intelligence engineering team which includes the Chipworks circuit and process reverse engineering teams focused on providing competitive technical intelligence.
In a career spanning more than 20 years Gary has been on the technology and business sides of semiconductors and telecom; he’s equally comfortable as a process engineer or business leader managing more than 250 technology professionals.
Before joining Chipworks, Gary was director of operations at Nortel Network’s High Performance Optical Components line of business (divested to Bookham Technology in November 2002.) Gary was accountable for the production of semiconductor lasers, detectors and modulators used in modern optical networks.
Earlier in his career Gary held progressively senior technical positions at Nortel Networks, including director, GaAs fab operations, a role whose scope involved all engineering, operations for wafer fabrication and probe and test.
Gary honed his engineering skills at STC Components in the UK. Developing silicon process technologies such as the first commercial polysilicon-emitter bipolar processes and. CMOS process for fast access SRAMS.
Gary keeps busy when he’s not working by playing hockey (he’s a true Canadian convert) and soccer, he is a key member of Chipworks FC.
Gary earned a B.SC (hons) in Physical Electronics at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England.

Dick James
Senior Technology Advisor

A sought after speaker for technical conferences and frequently published technical author, and Chipworks' Blogger-in-Chief, Dick James graduated in 1971 with a Masters degree in Microelectronics and Semiconductor Devices from the University of Southampton in England, after gaining a B.Sc in Applied Chemistry from the University of Salford. He has spent over 30 years working in the process development, design, manufacturing, packaging and reverse engineering of semiconductor devices.
He joined the Chipworks team in March 1995 as Manager, Microstructural Characterization, and is currently Senior Technology Analyst. As Senior Technology Advisor he acts as an internal and external consultant to Chipworks staff and customers, dealing with the microstructural characterization of devices, process analysis, wafer fabrication, optical devices, and technical training.
Dick James worked for Philips Semiconductor in the UK prior to joining Northern Telecom in Ottawa, and has held positions as Process Development Engineer, Project Manager, and Line Manager. In addition, he spent five years with Revenue Canada working with the Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credit program, and acting as Senior Scientific Advisor to the Department.
He is a member of the Electrochemical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

James (Jim) Morrison
Product Manager, Technical Intelligence

Jim Morrison loves to work inside technology to deliver a solid return on his customers' technology and marketing investments. With more than 20 years of senior level experience across a broad spectrum of the high technology landscape, Jim has held key roles in marketing, research and business development in semiconductor manufacturing, mobile computing and communications, IP infrastructure and PCB manufacturing.
In his role at Chipworks, Jim leads the business development and technical marketing initiatives of the Technical Intelligence team. Jim is responsible for defining markets, recognizing the potential of emerging technologies, helping to build customer relationships and develop the marketing initiatives to deliver the technical reports developed by the engineering team. He works closely with senior management and the highly skilled engineers at Chipworks to help drive year-over year growth for the Company.
Prior to joining Chipworks Jim held senior roles, including partner, and vice president and senior product line manager in leading-edge technology firms across North America. His strategic market insight and counsel has resulted in increases on the return on investment to clients and his employers time and time again.
While serving as product line manager at GSI-Lumonics – an Ottawa-based member of the global GSI Group of high tech companies – Jim developed a high-speed micro laser drilling system that enabled the manufacture of extremely high-density chip scale packages for the mobile phone industry.
At Image Micro Systems, as the director of Sales and Marketing, Jim developed an advanced deep UV lithography system which enabled innovative IDM’s to begin producing sub micron features.
In addition to his technology expertise, Jim is a solid communicator and has also managed all aspects of corporate and marketing communications, including collateral development and exhibit marketing.
Jim resides in Ottawa, Canada with his family and during the off hours he enjoys landscaping and gardening. He earned a BSEE (Bachelor Science, Electronic Engineering) with honors in 1985 from the Wentworth Institute of Technology and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
